A Love Letter to my Yoga Mat

2 minutes

My dearest yoga mat,

As I unroll you on the ground, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude and reverence. You are my sacred space, my sanctuary where I can escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

On your surface, I find cleanliness and purity. No outside shoes, dirty hands, or unclean feet are allowed to desecrate your sanctity. You are a place of transformation, where I can shed the layers of stress and tension that accumulate throughout the day.

As I move through my practice, you become an extension of my body. My thoughts and my breath flow through me, guided by the rhythm of my movements. The distractions of the world fade away, and I’m left with nothing but the present moment. On your surface, I find release and transformation; while the worries and anxieties that cling to me like unwanted guests are gently loosened and dissolved, as I’m gently nudged towards a state of inner peace.

You are a witness to my triumphs and my failures. You have seen me struggle and you have seen me soar. You have been there for me through it all, never judging – as I often do myself – and always providing a safe and supportive space for me to explore my limits.

In a world that is often chaotic and unpredictable, you are a constant source of comfort and stability. You are a reminder that I am always capable of finding peace within myself, no matter what is happening around me. Even when I’m not practicing, you’re a symbol of my commitment to my well-being. Your presence in my home is a reminder to take care of myself, to nurture my body and my mind.

I’m grateful for the gift of your presence in my life. You are more than just a piece of equipment. You are a symbol of my commitment to my own well-being.

Thank you for being my sacred space.

And to all other mats: whether you are my own or someone else’s personal mat, or a borrowed mat in a group class, I respect you as a sacred space. I will always treat you with care and I will not allow anyone to disrespect you. All yoga practitioners understand the importance of keeping you clean and free from distractions.

You are a symbol of the yogic tradition, a reminder that the body is a temple and that the mind is a powerful tool for transformation.

Thank you for being a part of my journey.

With love, Sam
